Johannes Knudsen Berge: First Hande descendant in America, 1849

The earliest known emigrant to America in the Hande family is believed to have been Johannes Knudsen Berge, the second son of Knud Tordsen Berge and Ingri Johannesdatter Hande. He was born in Vestre Slidre, Valdres, Norway on the 8th of September 1825 and baptized on 18th of October, according to records found in the Mormon Genealogical Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.
At this time in Norway, the home farm customarily went to the oldest son. Johannes, at age 25, decided to go to America, and on the 11th of April 1849 he is recorded in the parish register as leaving for America. Hunger for land was the chief reason for emigration. As early as 1845 or 1847, people left Vang and Slidre parishes in Norway. They settled along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin in what is now the City of Manitowoc until they decided on land in Manitowoc County.
On the 2nd December 1850, "Johannes Knudtzen" entered on 160 acres of land at the General Land Office in Menasha, Wisconsin. (This is the spelling of his name in the official records and the form he continued to use for many years thereafter.) He now had to prove to the Government that he would work the land, improve it, and also pay 50 cents an acre. He did this and received a land patent from the United States Government on the 10th of July 1851. His homestead farm in Liberty Township was covered with solid trees of hemlock, pine and patches of hardwood, mostly oak.
Johannes K. Berge and Marit Jogersdatter Qvam were married the 3rd of October 1850 in the city of Manitowoc. Until they were able to build a cabin on their farm, they lived in the city. Johannes and two of his neighbors came out from Manitowoc whenever possible to cut down trees and build cabins for their families. Trees had to be marked so they wouldn't lose their way on the trip. Supplies were brought out and kept in chests or the trunks they had brought from Norway. Water was taken from a creek on the property until a well could be dug. In the 1870 census, it shows that Johannes had cleared 20 acres of land and there were 30 acres of woods with a full value of $1,000. He had implements worth $50, two horses, two cows, two young stock, six sheep and one pig. The value of all his livestock was $295. He and his family raised 26 bushels of wheat and 80 bushels of oats, grew ten bushels of potatoes, harvested one ton of hay, made 160 pounds of butter, and cut 18 cords of wood, all of which produce was valued at $310.
According to the 1860 and 1870 census, Johannes and Marit were listed as Knudtzen, but their children are listed as Johnsons and Johnsdatters. They had nine children, two boys and seven girls. Knud Johnson, the oldest son, was born the 11th of January 1852. The youngest child was also a boy named John Johnson, born in 1871. Four of the seven girls died in their twenties. Their names are all engraved on the large tombstone along with the names of their parents in the Valders West Cemetery, about one and a half miles from the homestead.
One of the first tasks after establishing a home and a means of livelihood was to start a church. On the 4th of October 1850, a letter of call to secure a minister shows Johannes Knudtzen as one of the signatories. On the 16th of June 1851 he signed the church constitution, along with a group of 62 men, all originating from the Valdres valley in Norway. The first church built in the area of Valders, Wisconsin, was an octagonal, log structure with all the walls of the same breadth. When completed in 1856, the church had a beautiful pulpit and baptismal font. The mahogany pulpit was also eight-sided with "masamaling." The baptismal font was painted a bluish white to resemble blue marble.
Johannes K. Berge and his wife Marit (or "Mary") sold their farm on the 27th of April 1886 to their son Knud B. Johnson and his wife Aletta C. Larsen. Johannes died on the 25th of January 1887 and was buried with the name "John K. Berge" (not Knudtzen) on his tombstone. Marit lived with Knud and Aletta on the farm until her death on the 22nd July 1891. She is buried next to her husband and daughters in the Valders West Cemetery.
The original homestead has been in Johannes K. Berge's family since he purchased it in 1850, although all the successive owners have the Johnson name: his son Knud Johnson, from 1886; his son's widow Aletta Johnson, from 1896; grandson Joel C. Johnson, from 1916; great-grandson Kermit W. Johnson, from 1947; and great-great-grandson Keith Johnson, from 1982. Keith and Brenda Johnson currently operate this farm in addition to other purchased and rented acreage.

THE REVEREND HALVARD H. HANDE (1846-1887) by D'Arcy Hande
The name of Halvard Hande, one of the foremost members of our family, was commonplace among Norwegians in the United States a century ago, but unfortunately has now largely been forgotten. Once the editor of the respected Norwegian-language newspaper "Norden", published in Chicago, he has been described as "a quick-witted polemicist, a talent that had abundant opportunity to develop within the realm of Norwegian-American publishing."* Halvard was born on 10th January 1846 on Nedre Hande farm, Vestre Slidre, Valdres, Norway, the fifth child of Halvor Johannesson Hande and his wife Marit Knudsdatter Neste. He was baptized on 8th February as Halvor Halvorsen Hande, although in later life at least he spelled his name "Halvard" or "Hallward". He showed early signs of ability when, at the age of five, he convinced an older brother (either Johannes, born 1834, or Knud, born 1842) to teach him to read. He rapidly advanced through the local school, receiving specialized instruction from the church precentor and pastor to supplement his diligent study at home. At the age of 17, Halvard began study at Gjertsen's Latin School in the Norwegian capital of Christiania (now Oslo), graduating at the top of his class in 1866. However, during that time he contracted "nervous fever" (probably typhoid), which seriously weakened him and left him in poor health for the rest of his short life. The long days of reading and study and the resulting lack of physical exercise compounded this problem. Lacking the financial means to continue his formal education, he took a position as a teacher in Lillesand, 1868-70. He also studied Philology and Philosophy on his own until he was able to enter the University of Christiania (Oslo) in 1871. He received his degree in Theology the next year. During a year spent at home to recover his health, he wrote two books. His play "Ei Hugvending" (A Change of Heart) was later published anonymously in America about 1876 and was popular among young people's groups both in Norway and the United States. The other book, "Segner fraa Bygdom", was published in Christiania in 1871 (translated in the 1950s by his granddaughter Margaret Midelfort under the title "Legends from Valdres").+ Sometime during this time Halvard was married to Louise Neumann at Drammen, southwest of Oslo, although the date and circumstances are not known. Reading about the work of the Norwegian Lutheran Church in America awakened a desire in young Halvard to serve among the emigrants to the United States. After discussing a call with Pastor Jacob Aal Ottesen, who was in Norway recruiting pastors for America, he made the decision to emigrate. In 1872, he and Louise left for America, arriving just before Christmas at Estherville, Iowa, where he was to begin work as the Lutheran pastor. After a very difficult two years at Estherville, during which there were numerous congregational disputes, his wife Louise died of tuberculosis, and his own health worsened, Halvard seriously considered returning to Norway. But an offer came from I.T. Relling of Chicago, whom he had met while they were students in Norway, to take on the position of editor of his newly established paper "Norden." This offer was accepted in 1874, and for the next eight years he applied his considerable abilities to earning for the paper a reputation for thoroughness and sound judgment and for himself one of editorial brilliance and religious conservatism. In June 1875 he married Hanna Andrea Margrethe Helberg (born 1854)in Chicago. Their only child, a daughter by the name of Margarita, was born there the next year. Again tragedy struck when Hanna died in 1880 and Halvard's health began to decline. In 1882 he was forced to resign his editorship and move to Texas, where it was hoped the milder climate would restore his health. While there he operated a drug store at Round Rock, a small village south of Austin.+ Halvard embarked into matrimony a third time in 1883, when he married Elizabeth (Klinkenberg) Johnson (born 1850) at Round Rock. The next year they returned to Chicago, where Halvard was once again made editor of "Norden". In 1885 their son John Halward was born. The many difficulties he endured had a deep effect on Halvard's outlook. He has been described by his son John as "morose and at times despondent." And a student of his writings has said that they exhibit a tangible bitterness, which he attributes to his poor health. His short, but impressive career came to an end when he died at Chicago on 6th December 1887. He was buried in Mount Olive cemetery, amid the accolades of his fellow Norwegian-American journalists. The editor of "Amerika" wrote:
He was well endowed with the necessary characteristics of a diligent editor. He wielded a brilliant pen and expressed himself in such a clear and straightforward manner that one could not be left in doubt what he wanted to say. By nature critically inclined, he had a sharp eye for everything unjust and crooked and attacked it with fearless courage. It can be truth© fully said, that with him the Norwegian newspaper business here in this country has lost its most capable representative.
Halvard's death left his wife and two children in financial straits. His widow Elizabeth struggled to provide for the family by operating boarding houses and a restaurant in Chicago. She lived until 1923, spending the last few years with her stepdaughter Margarita and her family in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Margarita had married Dr. H.C.U. Midelfart, a physician in Eau Claire, in 1898. They had a family of 11 children. The son, John, became an engineer on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He and his wife Margaret had two children.
