OBITUARY: Berit O. Hande, age 95, passed away peacefully in Majorstutunet home for the aged, Oslo, Norway on 17 August 2004. She was born on Midt-Hande farm, Vestre Slidre parish, Valdres, Norway, on 9 April 1909, the daughter of Ole Halvorson and Ragna Jørgensdatter (Haugen) Øvre Hande. In 1922 her parents purchased and moved to the neighboring Øvre Hande farm. At a young age Berit moved to Oslo, where she worked long days while taking advanced studies in the evenings. After that she set her sites on going to America, but first she was employed with foreign shipping and travelled to many places around the world for several years in the 1940s. It was difficult to obtain entry to the U.S., but finally in the early 1950s someone helped Berit to raise the $7,000 security to get in. At first she lived in New York and Florida, but she later moved to California, living briefly in San Francisco. She then settled in Los Angeles, where she worked as a companion and housekeeper for a lady in Beverly Hills for many years. Her niece Ragna remembers the excitement whenever Tante Berit visited Norway or when special packages of delicious-smelling goodies arrived from her in the mail from America. Besides being generous, she was a pretty, intelligent woman, who was always so interesting to visit with. Berit moved back to Norway in 1987, taking up residence in Majorstuen, Oslo. Although she never married and had no children of her own, she is held in loving memory by her sister Sigrid's children, Kåre Lome on the Øvre Hande farm, Ingrid Hagmann, Otto Lome, and Ragna Hande-Lome.

Obituary for Signe Ortiz
Signe Midelfart Ortiz, well-known artist, UW-EC teacher and social activist, died of old age on March 19, 2004, at her assisted living apartment in Walnut Creek, Calif. She was 91.
Born Signe Sophie Midelfart, on January 18, 1913, she was the eighth, and last surviving, of the 11 children of Dr. Hans Christian Ulrich Midelfart and Margarita Hande Midelfart. Dr. H.C.U. Midelfart was a Norwegian doctor who came to Eau Claire in the late 1890s, and was a co-founder of what is now the Midelfort Clinic.
Signe Midelfart Ortiz was born and raised in Eau Claire and spent most of her childhood summers at the Midelfart family cottage on Lake Chetek. Her childhood in the Midelfart home imbued in her four characteristics that were cornerstones of her life: a love of music and the arts, a prodigious work ethic, a passion for continuous learning, and a commitment to community service. She attended preschool at "Miss Susie's" in the Third Ward, elementary school at the Model School of the Wisconsin State Teacher's College in Eau Claire (later UW-EC, where she was to teach), and graduated from Eau Claire High School early in 1929.
Each of the 11 Midelfart children had to find their own unique identity if they were to flourish in such a large household. From the time she was little and began designing dresses for her dolls and re-arranging the doll house, her ability to see the world through the eyes of the artist became her most distinguishing feature, foreshadowing her future career as a fiber artist and teacher.
In 1934, Signe earned her bachelor's degree in art from Carlton College in Northfield, Minn. In 1935 to '36, she attended the Chicago Art Institute and studied drawing and painting. In 1937, she moved to New York City, where she attended the New York Art Student's League, got her first teaching experience at a progressive school called the City and County Day School and studied dance at the Hanna Holm School of Dance.
While on a trip to Norway in 1937, she came down with tuberculosis - at that time a feared and often deadly disease. She spent the next two years at the State Sanitarium between Madison and Milwaukee and three more years recuperating at home in Eau Claire where her brother, Dr. P.A. Midelfort, a specialist in thoracic medicine, assisted in her care. She later said of the experience, "I consider my time at the State Sanitarium to be the most valuable school I ever went to. I learned more about people and more about enjoying life in the moment than I had up to that time." During her recovery, she considered taking up occupational therapy; and in 1943, she resumed her studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, with a focus on metalwork.
In 1944, she went to the Cranbrook Academy of Art and discovered two important loves that would shape the rest of her life: weaving and her future husband. She took a weaving class because the metalwork instructor was away in the Second World War, and for the first time felt completely at home with her art. She earned her M.F.A degree in fiber arts from Cranbrook in 1946, and moved to New York where she taught weaving at Columbia University Teachers College. She soon married her Cranbrook sweetheart, Héctor Ortiz Garzón, an Uruguayan attorney who had worked his way through school as an artist and left his law practice to study art. After the war, Hector started a career at the United Nations, working in graphic arts, and later in the fields of translation and technical assistance. The Ortiz family expanded with the birth of two sons in 1949 and 1951.
Weaving proved the more durable of her Cranbrook loves and Signe Ortiz returned with her sons to Eau Claire in 1954, a time when single parenthood was not nearly so common, but every bit as challenging as it is today. She applied her knowledge of fabrics as a clerk in a women's specialty clothing store, as a knitting instructor at the vocational school and as a private knitting instructor. Then, in 1959, she began a 20-year teaching career with the art department at UW-EC, where she created a weaving and fiber arts department that over the years expanded from two to 20 looms and included such fiber-related media as weaving, crochet, stitchery, batik, layered paper, and more. Her teaching career took her from substitute teacher to tenured associate professor at her retirement from teaching in 1979. She excelled at finding creative ways to help her students see the world through the eyes of the artist, often taking and using her own photographs of the world around her to demonstrate how composition and an appreciation of color, texture and form foster the ability to find and enjoy beauty. Her love of learning continued even after retirement when she studied weaving in Sweden, Poland, Denmark, and Mexico, studied the Norwegian language in Eau Claire and Norway, and took classes in photography.
In addition to teaching, Signe Ortiz continued to produce her own works in every one of the media she taught, as well as drawing and photography. She became a well-known artist in the upper Midwest with major commissioned works on exhibit at Luther, St. Olaf, and Carlton Colleges, at UW-EC in both the Fine Arts and Ecumenical Center buildings, at the Midelfort Clinic and Luther Hospital, Grace Lutheran Church, and in various private collections. Her work almost always had roots in a spiritual or intellectual message transformed into a visual form and reflected in the titles of commissioned weavings such as the "Sail of Faith" for Luther College in Iowa, or the form of her six-paneled weaving in the UW-EC Fine Arts Center that symbolizes education opening successive doors to enlightenment. She continued her work as an artist for more than 25 years after her retirement, up to the last months of her life.
Signe Ortiz will also be remembered for her community contributions and social activism. Her activities ranged from designing costumes for "Noah's Flood," a community opera produced in the 1960s, participation in the League of Women Voters and anti-war efforts during the Vietnam era. Her home was always a place where candid opinions and good music could be heard, where students of varied national origins were welcomed, and where the issues of the day were discussed, despaired over, and laughed about around the dinner table or over a bowl of homemade soup.
Signe Sophie Midelfart Ortiz is survived by her sons, Mark Frederick Ortiz, a race car suspension consultant in Kannapolis, N.C., and Victor R. Ortiz, an organization effectiveness consultant in Walnut Creek, Calif.; and is also fondly remembered and missed by numerous Midelfart/Midelfort nieces and nephews in the U.S., Canada and Norway.
A memorial and interment will be held during this coming summer in Eau Claire.

Frank T. and Julia Handy: Entrepreneurial Spirit in the Pioneer West
by Karen Yakel
One of our more interesting forebears was Frank T. Handy, who made a name for himself as a businessman, homesteader and sportsman in North Dakota and Montana. He was born and baptized Finkel Tostenson Hande in Vestre Slidre, Valdres, Norway in December 1862, the second son of Tosten Halvorson and Sigri Finkelsdatter Hande. The family emigrated to America in 1866, at first settling in Rice County, near Nerstrand, Minnesota, then moving farther north in the state to Stearns County between 1875 and 1880. By 1880 Frank was making his own way in the world. In the 1880 census, we find him working as a clerk in Willmar, Kandiyohi County. He was by then spelling his surname "Handy," a more Americanized version of the Norwegian name. By the mid-1880s he had moved on to Grafton, North Dakota, a pioneer town incorporated in 1881. Frank Handy and Julia Burke, both age 29, were united in marriage 3 January 1892, at her brother Anton's home. (Her sister Lena was married at the same time.) The marriage certificate states the marriage took place in Garfield, North Dakota, although Anton lived in Park River. Rev. G.I. Ouiland, a Lutheran minister, conducted the ceremony. Severt Idsall and Amanda Stensland served as witnesses. Frank was a resident of Grafton at the time, where he was engaged in the restaurant business. Julia lived in Park River, where she was employed. She was also a native of Valdres district, Norway, born on 17 August 1863, the daughter of Simon and Anna Burke. After their marriage Frank and Julia made their home in Grafton. Frank and Julia had three children, all born in Grafton. Verda was born 11 November 1892. Howard was born 13 May 1894. His birth made the local paper. Frank didn't miss an opportunity to pass out the cigars. He was a proud daddy. Lena was born 23 August 1902. When Verda was born, they were living over a Chinese laundry. (There was a Sing Chong Laundry across from the post office about this time.) Frank continued in the restaurant business. He and Julia were both excel© lent cooks. This article appeared about Frank in the Grafton News and Times, 21 October 1904:
"No matter how substantial a meal may be, you want it carefully prepared and served. This is why so many people eat at Frank Handy's. It is a popular resort and is open day and evening for serving patrons with the most excellent meals, consisting of meats, vegetables, and the very best coffee, and a specialty is made of all short orders and lunches. Oysters and game are served in season. Mr. Handy is one of the most competent caterers in the city, and appreciates what the people require, and he also makes it a point to give it to them. Too much cannot be said regarding Mr. Handy's ability in this line, and all who are acquainted with his place will bear us out in saying that it is, without exception, the best managed eating house in the neighborhood. The people in general appreciate this fact, and he has built up a patronage which reflects his popularity and enterprise. He is one of our pioneer residents and his present place of business has been established for the past 18 years. He is well known to all our citizens, and also in all the surrounding country, and is a favorite with all."
In 1891 Frank was a partner with Mickle in the Pioneer Restaurant. Mickle bought Frank out in 1892. Frank then opened his own restaurant in the middle of August 1892. It was two doors north of the old Columbia Hotel. He furnished meals to prisoners who were in jail. He sold the restaurant in 1906 and took it back in 1907, eleven months later. The newspaper reported, "Frank Handy has gone back into the restaurant business at the old stand. Frank is perfection at getting up a short order meal and his old customers will be delighted to learn that juicy steaks are again obtainable." Frank liked to bird hunt and fish. He went on several fishing and hunting trips. Several articles appeared in the paper about these trips. Following are a couple of them:
"Frank Handy, John Soll, Harry Franklin, and Odin Olson left Sunday for a chicken hunt. Of course they would not shoot any until Monday Morning." (Hunting season opened Monday.) ["Grafton News and Times", 23 August 1894.]
"Jas. McDonald, T.H. Haralson, J.E. Hall, Mo Berg, F. Handy, James Phin and Chas. Hanson went to Walhalla (N.D.) on a whaling expedition Monday evening. The fishing was excellent with a seine and they fished all night with the exception of about an hour when Mr. Handy acted as "Bridget" and prepared a piscatorial barbecue. Unlike most fishermen, these gentlemen were able to dine from fish which they had caught--not bought. They returned the next morning with enough denizens of the deep left over to make two very good strings." ["Grafton News and Times", 3 June 1904.
Frank belonged to the Knights of Pythias, Sportsman Club, and the Sons of Norway. The Sportsman Club sponsored a skeet shooting contest, in which Frank took part. He didn't do too badly, usually
