Ola Hermundsson Berge stands in a special postion among the painters in Valdres. None set for himself such a mark in rosemåling, and none made a greater influence in the growth of the local style. His period of active work wasn't more than about 35 years, and he was a farmer besides a painter for most of the time. Nevertheless he must have had an unbelievably wide reach. Outside of the churches, there are today nearly 150 of his works registered, of these around 120 in the Valdres district. Now we know that a great many have been lost, painted over or sold out of the district, and this a high number. He also made a large contribution to church painting in his own community. He executed larger or smaller works in nine of the Valdres churches. But outside of Peder Aadnes, there were scarcely any district painters in the whole country who made a greater contribution in this field.
Ola Hermundsson was born in Reinli sub-parish in South Aurdal in 1768 and baptized in Reinli church the 31st December the same year. His parents were Hermund Knutson Stavdal (born about 1735) and Ragnhild Mikkelsdotter Narud (1729-1800). It has been rather unclear where his parents were living when Ola was born, some believing it was in Kløvo, part of Juvkam, while others have mentioned Hermundslie, part of Kollsgard. Research in the archives shows that he was born in Moe, Stavadale, Reinli, and he is believed to have grown up on Hermundsplasse, a tenancy on Lien (farm no. 1) in the same district.
It is also clear that he lived for a time in the 1790s on a tenancy on Juvkam (Juvkameie?) in Bagn and signed himself with that name. In the Reinli stave church there stands a tablet with the names of all who gave money towards the new church bell, certainly 100 names in elegant writing. Beneath it is written, "Painted by me, Ole Hermundsen Jucham, 18th April 1799."
In the same year, the 24th June, he married the 40 year old [not really, she was only 29!] widow Marit Halvorsdotter Berge who owned South Berge, Røn, Vestre Slidre. She died before him on 5th June 1808. Ola Hermundsson sold Berge three years later to Ola Gudbrandssen for 600 riksdaler and kept a pension on the farm.
On 19th September 1812 the painter married again to widow Kristi Engebretsdotter Granheim, Ulnes, North Aurdal. They had a son born the same year named Helge, who was also a capable rosemåler (see Helge Olsson Kvale).
Ola Hermundsson lived for the rest of his time on Granheim. He died the 28th December 1825 and was buried in Ulnes churchyard the 8th January 1826.
It is said that Ola Hermundsson learned painting in Kristiania and out in the flatlands. That he was in direct contact with rokokko master Peder Aadnes from Land [parish] is unlikely, but it is obvious that he was the great model. And Ola had rich opportunity to study the work of that renowned painter, both in the churches and on big farms in the outer districts. At any rate he needed go no farther than to the main church at home in Bagn, where Aadnes decorated the pulpit and stairway walls in the middle of the 1770s.
