OBITUARY: Emma Nyland, age 92, died 14 September 2004 at North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji, Minn. Emma Johanna Melbo was born on 18 November 1911 in rural Trail, Minn., to parents Sigurd and Ella (Handy) Melbo. Her maternal grandparents were Nils P. and Johanna Hande/Handy. She grew up in rural Trail, attended the Trail school and graduated from Gully High School. She was united in marriage to Helmer Nyland on 17 October 1931 in Fosston, Minn. Following their marriage they farmed for 10 years in the Gully area before moving to Wisconsin to follow Helmer's profession. After Helmer's passing in 1957, Emma returned to Trail and purchased the family farm. She lived on the farm until 1997 when she moved to an apartment in the Gully Mall, where she was currently residing. She was a member of Sand Valley Lutheran Church at Trail, where she was active in Bible study group and Ladies Aid. She was an avid quilter, gardener, and loved to sew. Survivors include three children, Norma (Dennis) Nelson of Wausau, Wisconsin, Ole Nyland of Fosston, and Diane (Mark) Plante of Bemidji; 15 grandchildren; four step- grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. Also surviving are three sisters, Stella Kothenbeutel of Rochester, Minn., Naomi Hedland of Minneapolis, and Joyce Monte of Grand Meadow, Minn.; one brother, Larry (Norma) Emerson of Weme, Minn.; and special aunt, friend and skipbo partner, Effie Handy of Gully. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Emma was preceded in death by her husband; parents; daughter Marian Reiche; brother Bjarne Melbo; an infant sister; daughter-in-law Linda Nyland; and step-granddaughter Jamie Luer. The funeral service was held at Sand Valley Lutheran Church on 19 September 2004 with interment in the Sand Valley Lutheran cemetery.

OBITUARY: Donald Arthur Quickstad died at his home near Milaca, Minn., on July 8, 2001 at the age of 74 years, having recently being diagnosed at Mayo Hospital, Rochester with stomach cancer. Don was born May 10, 1927, the son of Arthur O. Quickstad and Myrtle E. Tollefson. He grew up and graduated from high school in Waseca, Minn., leaving the following day for World War II service in the U.S. Navy. He was home on leave when VJ Day was celebrated. Don was very proud of his 20 years military service in the U.S. Navy, including serving in Korea during the Korean War on board a minesweeper and at DaNang, Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Navy in November 1965 as a Chief Petty Officer at which time he transferred to the U.S. Naval Fleet Reserve. Don continued his education at the Uni-versity of Minnesota, transferring to Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minn., where he earned double majors, a Bachelor of Sci-ence in Mathematics and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He then started and completed his career in education at Milaca where he taught algebra and 7th-9th grade mathe-matics and social studies, retiring again in 1991 from 21 years teaching. He then did substitute teaching for 5-6 years. Don was a man of many talents in various fields, rang-ing from genealogy research to oil painting, from woodworking to computer work. He was also an avid collector of "stuff." Most of all he loved the time spent with his three children, who were the highlights of his life. During the school years he not only had his children riding along with him to games, fairs, parades, etc., but also the friends of his children--they were all very special to him. Don is survived by his wife, Alair (daughter of Alice Handy Thompson, granddaughter of Nils P. Hande/Handy), whom he met and married in San Diego, California, Septem-ber 5, 1964; his son Steve and wife Connie of Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland; son Dave and wife Nicole of Neptune Beach, Florida; daughter Sandra and husband Les Weibye of Andover, Minn.; three grandchildren, Gabrielle "Gabi" and Jacob Quickstad, and Alexander Weibye. He is also survived by two sisters Mary Rahman and Jan Liescke, in-laws John and Ruth Ann Johnson and Vic and Elizabeth Thompson, nieces, nephews and special friends Rudy and Marion Majerle and Howard Bleed and Louie Jansen. Don was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Milaca, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the U.S. Naval Fleet Reserve, and a Norwegian genealogical society. Memorial services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Milaca with Rev. Gary Fehring officiating. Burial was "at sea" from the fantail of a U.S. Navy destroyer off the coast of Florida.

She graduated early from McVille High School and worked as an assistant Physical Education teacher before marrying Cyrus Walhood (son of Hilda Skaalrud Walhood and grandson of Barbo Hande Skaalrud) on 25 March1940 in Fisher, Minn.
Clenora and Cyrus had seven children at McVille before the family moved to Portland Oregon in 1959. Clenora was a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She participated in Sons of Norway activities and volunteered as a reading tutor for high school students.
Clenora is remembered by many for her welcoming home, loving spirit and open acceptance of others. Survivors include daughter Cheryl of Albany, Oregon, and sons Steven of Vancouver, Washington, and Frederic, Dale, Wesley, Michael and Daniel, all of Portland, Oregon. Clenora also leaves fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

OBITUARY: Iona Adeline Skaalrud Olsen of New London, Minn., died of caner at the age of 78 on 9 September 2004 at Rice Care Center, Willmar, Minn. Iona was born 6 July 1926 in New London, the daughter of Harry and Luella (Bendickson) Skaalrud, and granddaughter of Barbo Hande Skaalrud. She grew up in the New London area. On 19 November 1949 she married Oliver R. Olsen at Mason City, Iowa. They made their home in Minnetonka and then Hopkins, Minn., until 1992 when they moved to New London. Iona is survived by her husband; six sons, Donald (and Maureen) of Minnetonka, Ray (and Darlene) of Eden Prairie, Minn., James (and Renae) of Anoka, Minn., Michael of Minnetonka, Dale (and Debbie) of Albertville, Minn., and Gary (and Shannon) of New London; one daughter, Debra (and Michael) DeMuth of Belgrade, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. The funeral service was held 13 September 2004 at the Washburn-McReavy Strobeck Johnson chapel, Hopkins, Minn. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Bill was born January 14, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri, to William Henry and Ester (Russell) Roe. He was an electronics engi-neer with the Federal Aviation Administra-tion for 30 years and worked with Lockheed-Martin for five years, before retiring in 1998. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He married Lana J. Norman (daughter of Bertha Hande Norman, grand-daughter of Knut H. Hande) on April 7, 1972, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy Roe and Cotton Roe; and a sister, Paulette McKinley. Survivors include his wife, Lana; sons, William Roe Jr., Columbia, Missouri; Bob and Starr Roe, Jefferson City, Missouri; Ed and Joyce Roe, Kansas City, Missouri; Tom and Pat Roe, Eldon, Missouri; Tim and Dawn Roe of Eldon; and Greg and Renee Roe, Raymore, Missouri; brother, Edward Eugene Roe, St. Louis; sister, Helen Hill, Eldon; 22 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. OBITUARY: Barrie Lynne Hande passed away peacefully at home in Esterhazy, Sask., on 13 January 2000, spending his last days surrounded by those he loved and who loved him. Barrie was born on 12 March 1937 at Marchwell, Sask., eldest son of Isabel (Bennett) and Ernest Hande, grandson of Halvor H. Hande. He received his schooling in Marchwell and Langenburg, Sask., and was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Marchwell. After graduation, he became an electrical lineman in Calgary.
On 22 May 1959, he married Juline Carla Peterson in Calgary. The next year they moved to the USA where he attended Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Nebraska, and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1967. In 1968, they moved to Bangladesh, where Barrie began is career as an overseas consulting engineer. This was to take the family to Brazil and Indonesia also, along with a brief period in Niagara Falls, Ontario. While overseas, they traveled extensively in Southeast Asia, Africa, South America, and Scandinavia. From this, Barrie developed a keen interest in world affairs and other cultures.
In 1974, they and their family of five moved to Esterhazy where Barrie was employed at International Minerals Corporation (IMC) in various engineering capacities. Outside of short-term stints in the States and eastern Canada, this was home for the remainder of his life. He took great interest in family history and loved telling stories from the past to family. Barrie kept in touch with numerous friends from overseas. He enjoyed reading, television, woodworking, travel, music, and any project which involved his grandchildren. He was active with the Boy Scouts, a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and served several terms as worshipful master of the Esterhazy Masonic Lodge No. 215.
Barrie is survived by: his wife, Julie; daughters, Stephanie (Stan) Casar of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Melissa of Edmonton, Alberta, and Zara of Saskatoon, Sask.; sons, Leif of Regina, Sask., and Trevor of Seoul, Korea; grandchildren, Dominic and Mercedes Casar; brothers Boyd (Shirley) and Dirk (Cheryl) of Calgary, and D'Arcy (Bonnie) of Saskatoon; brother-in-law, Arland (Linda) Peterson of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Clair.
The funeral service was held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Esterhazy, on January 17, Rev. W. Ray Beaver officiating. Interment followed in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Marchwell.

OBITUARY: Lyle Elwood Wirth, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away at his residence on August 11, 2001, at the age of 89 years. The son of Theodore and Cora (Siegel) Wirth, he was born on June 16, 1912 at Lamartine, Wisconsin. He grew up and received his education in the area. Lyle was united in marriage with Ruth Crotser on September 25, 1946. Ruth preceded him in death on January 22, 1970. Lyle lived most of his life in the U.S. Mid-west, but traveled extensively throughout the United States. He began his career in sales with Firestone during World War II. He later sold heavy equipment for International Harvester. Lyle was united in marriage with Ione Christensen Tillema (daughter of Ellen Skaalrud Christensen, granddaughter of Ingri Hande Skaalrud) on January 16, 1971. In 1975, he started a coffee service in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Lyle retired in 1982 and the couple moved to Sioux Falls. Lyle was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. In Aberdeen, Lyle served as governor of the Moose Lodge. He was also a lifetime fan of the Atlanta Braves. He enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, and often played in cribbage tournaments. His ready wit and easy smile will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Ione Wirth of Sioux Falls; his children, Ralph Wirth and his wife, Bettye, Trail, Oregon, John Wirth and his wife, Gail, Los Angeles, Nancy Walker and her husband, Richard, Spokane, Washington, Marie Kivela and her husband, Rick, Houston, Texas; his step-children, Christine Denicola and her husband, Robert, Lincoln, Nebras-ka, Scott Tillema and his wife, Debra, Sioux Falls, Suzanne Felton and her husband, Frank, Alta, Wyoming, Catherine Allan and her husband, John, Rapid City, S.D., Mark Tillema and his wife, Jayne, Simi Valley, California; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Lyle was also preceded in death by his son, Michael Wirth. A memorial service was conducted by Rev. Bjorn Lervik at Hope Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, on August 14. Committal was at Hills of Rest Memorial Park, Sioux Falls.

OBITUARY: Marshall Charles Skaalrud, age 64, of Crystal, Minn., died on 8 October 2000. He and his twin brother Melvin were born 13 September 1936 to Robert Skaalrud (son of Ingri Hande Skaalrud) and Mildred Nelson of Pennock, Minn. Their mother died in childbirth, so the twins were raised until they were 11 years old by their Aunt Ellen Skaalrud Christensen. Marshall married Beverly Buckner on 19 November 1960 and they had three children. Marshall is survived by wife, Beverly; son, Jeff Skaalrud; daughters, Nancy Skaalrud and Lisa Schneider; grandchildren, Andra Skaalrud, Lucas and Kristin Schneider; and his sister, Hildegard Lien. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Howard and Melvin, and sisters Marilyn Gjerde and Earleen Grose. The funeral service was held October 11 at First Lutheran Church of Crystal, Brooklyn Park, Minn. Interment was in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.

SWISSHOME, Ore. -- Lemoine Vernon "Skud" Skaalrud, 77, of Swisshome, formerly of Brooten, died April 27. The service was Sunday at Mapleton Grange Hall in Oregon. Arrangements were by Burn's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home in Florence, Ore. He was born May 28, 1926, in Sunburg to Alfred and Ruth (Ellingson) Skaalrud. He grew up in Brooten. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, serving 18 months overseas. He was awarded several medals for his service. He worked at various jobs before moving to Oregon in 1953. He married Pauline Bowman on Sept. 6, 1958. They later divorced. He is survived by his children, Vernon Skaalrud, Laurie (and Randy) Duval of Swisshome, Rebecca Funke of Florence, Ore., Ann Marie Kelly of La Pine, Ore., and Sharon (and Shane) Jones of Albany, Ore.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Alvira Beberger of Swisshome, and Irene Skaalrud of Brooten; brother, Harold (and JoAnn) Skaalrud of Spicer and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
