OBITUARY: Marjorie Lucille Kapell, 82, of Decorah, Iowa, died 5 October 2003 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, following a three-year battle with cancer. Marjorie was born on 26 May 1921 in Decorah, the daughter of Hans and Inga (Smedsrud) Spilde, granddaughter of Mattie Thorson Smedsrud, and great-granddaughter of Ingri Hande Thorson Solstein. She attended country school near the Canoe Ridge area. She married Albert Clem Kapell on 4 March 1945 and they farmed in the Ossian area for many years. She was a homemaker all of her life, raising her five children by herself after her husband died unexpectedly at a young age. Marjorie loved reading, doing crossword puzzles and collecting stamps, pens and pencils. She had a love of life, enjoyed dancing and yodeling (to the delight of her family) and never met a stranger. She was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church. Survivors include her two daughters, Arlette Schneider (Gerald) of Postville, Iowa, and Jane Callas (Richard) of Hiawatha, Iowa; three sons: Ted Kapell (Angela), Bob Kapell (Rochelle) and Al Joe Kapell (Deb) all of Blue Grass, Iowa; two stepchildren: Celine Schumann (Russ) of Deming, New Mexico, and Arlene Vick (Roger) of Hill City, South Dakota; one sister: Ruth Dinger (Clem) of Decorah; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Marjorie Kapell was preceded in death by her husband in 1960; her parents; one triplet son, John Edward Kapell, in infancy; one brother, Raymond Spilde; two sisters, Edith Bakken and Emma Davis; and one stepdaughter, Barbara Wurzer. Mass of Christian Burial was held on 8 October at St. Benedict's Church, Decorah, with Msgr. Cletus Hawes officiating. Interment was in St. Francis-deSales Catholic Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa.

OBITUARY: Marie Catherine Crawford Clinton, age 69, died on 24 April 2004 at her home in Spokane, Washington, after a short battle with cancer. She was born 4 December 1934 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, eldest child of Wesley N. and Eva C. (Ellis) Crawford, and granddaughter of Ragnhild Hande Crawford. As a youth she lived in New Hampshire, NewYork, and Wyoming, graduating from high school in Sheridan, Wyoming. After finishing school, Marie moved to Lewiston, Idaho, where she married A. Zane Clinton on 19 May 1956. Their son Daniel was born in 1963. Besides being a housewife and mother, she became active with the Boy Scouts. Zane died in 1982. Upon retiring from selling clothes in 1993, Marie moved to Washington state to live closer to her family. Marie is survived by her son Dan, his wife Diane, and two grandchildren, Joseph and Kelly Clinton, of Spokane; sister Carrie and brother-in-law Ron Baglien of Chehalis, Washington; brother William and sister-in-law Doris Crawford of Spokane; and sister-in-law Waldi Crawford of Alexandria, Virginia; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers John and W. Patrick Crawford. A graveside service was held 2 May 2004 at the Masonic section of Normal Hill Cemetery, Lewiston, Idaho.

OBITUARY: Dentist Karin Longva Hellum died on October 17, 2001 in Oslo, Norway, just before her 64th birthday of leukemia which she had battled for some years. She grew up in Larvik, Norway, studied dentistry in Heidelberg, Germany, married Halvard Hellum (son of Anna Louise Midelfart Hellum and grandson of Margarita Hande Midelfart) in Heidelberg in 1958 and terminated her studies to look after a growing family. Halvard was later accepted at Uppsala for continued medical studies after Heidelberg and the family moved there. After several years of medical practice in northern Sweden the family moved back to Larvik in 1975. When the children were old enough to leave home Karin continued and completed her dentistry studies. She carried on her dentistry practice in the same building as Halvard who is an ophthamologist. She was always interested in family and friends, loved travel and both hiking and skiing in the Norwegian mountains. She leaves behind her mother, a sister and brother, husband Halvard and four children (all married) and nine grandchildren. One son Pål and her daughter Catharina are engineers, working with computer technology, one son Christian is a surgeon, and the third son, Oscar, is just completing his dentistry studies in Bergen. The funeral and burial were in Larvik on October 29.

OBITUARY: Sarah Margrethe Seastone Fought, a thirty-year resident of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, died at Taylor Hospital, Scranton, Penn., on 23 September 2003 after a long struggle with a respiratory illness. Sarah was born 16 December 1937, the daughter of Dr. C. Victor and Elise W. (Midelfart) Seastone, and granddaughter of Margarita (Hande) and Dr. H.C.U. Midelfart. She grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, and studied Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Wisconsin there, earning her B.A. in 1959 and her M.A. in 1960. She studied a year at the Université de Caen in France and then taught Spanish in Hopkins Grammar School, New Haven, Conn., 1961-1965. Beginning in 1978, Sarah worked for many years at Swarthmore College, first as the administrative assistant in the Classics Department and then for "The Math Forum." She was also a vocal advocate for the non-faculty employees at Swarthmore. During the internet boom, she continued to work for the Forum when it became part of a "start-up" and then moved to Drexel University. Sarah had a life-long love of photography. In addition to editing Photophile magazine, 1976-1978, she was known locally for teaching photography at the Community Arts Center in Wallingford, 1981-1990. Two of her prints can be viewed in Lang Hall on the Swarthmore College campus. BIOGRAPHY

Edgar Kiehl of Twodot, Montana and Verda Handy of Harlowton, Montana were united in marriage before the Justice if the Peace in Big Timber, Montana, August 23, 1913. They more or less eloped since they did not tell anyone their plans. Ed was an area ranch hand at the time and Verda had taught school at the Bear Creek School, sixteen miles south of Twodot. Verda's dad was against the marriage. He felt a girl should not get married until she was 28. Since Verda was only 20, he considered her too young to get married. Once Frank Handy met his son-in-law, he liked him and the two became friends.
The Kiehls made their first home on the Campbell Ranch, owned by Dudly Hartt. They lived here until the place was sold. Dudly was Ed's boss. The ranch was located south of Twodot. In February 1914, they bought a piano in Harlowton, Montana. In July 1914, Hartt sold the Campbell Ranch. The Kiehls took the opportunity to visit Yellowstone National Park with friends. In August of that year, they went east to visit. Verda spent a month visiting friends and relatives in North Dakota. Ed went on to Virginia on business. When the Kiehls returned to Twodot, they moved to the Stone House Ranch owned by Hartt. It was thus called since the house was made of stone. They resided here when their first son, Charles Lyle, known as Bud was born.
In the summer of 1916, Ed bought the relinquishment on 320 acres on Middle Hopley from Lewis Robertson. Later, they bought several homesteads in the area. In September 1916, Ed bought his second car from Jake Karnop, Ford dealer in Harlowton, Montana. His son, George, told this story about Ed and a early car:
My father had one of the first cars when the model T ford arrived. After he had had it a few years, the radiator sprung a leak. He took some extra water with him and put corn meal in the radiator to stop the leak. Little did he know that the corn meal would boil up and plug the over flow pipe. He got about to Twodot when it blew up, but he was able to get there. Jake Karnop was the Under Sheriff at the time and was also in the Ford garage with Ward Beley. He (Jake) had brought a salesman up to Twodot in a new ford. The salesman was waiting in the car for Jake to come out of the store. My father went over and told him (salesman) that he was taking the car so he had better get his suitcase out of it. The salesman rushed into the store to tell Jake some one had stolen his car. He thought Jake would go after him, but Jake told him that it was 'just a damn horse thief that lived up along the mountain'. Jake brought out a new Ford the next day for my father. Jake would never tell him how he got my father's car back to Harlo.
Verda related the following story about the first winter they spent on the ranch to her granddaughter- in -law, Bernice Karnop. That first winter, Ed had gone to down to Selkirk to pick up some hay and potatoes. It was a bright winter day and after milking the cow, he started out with the team. But the clear weather did not hold. By afternoon, the wind had come up and it was snowing hard. Night came, but no Ed. I (Verda) put baby George and little Bud to bed and continued waiting. The thermometer read 52 below zero that night, the coldest we ever experienced at the ranch. In the morning I tried to milk the poor cow, but just couldn't do it. I decided to go to the neighbor for help. I managed to saddle the horse, but he bucked me off right into a snow bank. Bud was standing by the window watching. "Don't tell daddy I got bucked off,' I charged the little fellow. I hailed a neighbor riding by and asked him if he would milk the poor cow, who by now was bellowing out her discomfort. While he was still there, Ed came back. On the way home in the blizzard, he realized he was going in circles, so he stopped and crawled under the hay for the night. He slept on top of the potatoes to try to keep them from freezing. As soon as he got to the house, Bud told -him, "Mommy got bucked off the horse and she cried." "I know," his dad replied. "I saw the tracks in the snow where it happened."
In July 1917, Ed registered for the draft for the army for World War 1. He was listed as a resident of Twodot. During January 1918, Ed bought Ernest Long residence in Harlowton. This became their winter home. On March 28, 1918, their daughter, Helen, was born in the Jellison Hospital in Harlowton. It was not an easy time. The doctor had left Helen for dead, but the midwife would not give up on her. She worked through the night and kept Helen alive. The Kiehl's left for the ranch a few weeks later, after spending the winter in Harlowton. In May of 1918, Ed became ill with abdominal problems. He was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital in Lewistown and released about a week later. About the 12th of September, Ed became very ill while visiting in Big Timber. He was taken to a hospital in Billings where he under went surgery for appendicitis. Complications set in. He recovered and was back on his ranch in the fall.
On September 20, 1920, a baby boy was bom to the Kiehls. He died two days later. It was about this time, they bought the Tom Huskey ranch on Middle Hopley.
On October 8, 1924, Helen was awarded the New Testament for regular attendance at the Hopley Union Sunday School.
In November 1925, Ed brought a civil suit against Charles Holliday. Holliday's ranch was located north of the Freezer ranch at the time and was a neighbor of the Kiehls. There were two cases resulting from damages from sheep Holliday had pastured on Ed's land without permission. The court awarded Ed $25 in damages in the first case and $40 in the second. The cases took over a year to settle.
School was held at the Holliday ranch (1915 -1916) until the Lode School was built in the fall of 1916 about two miles south of the Holliday ranch and about five miles from the Kiehl ranch. The school served as a Sunday School as well. Church was held here twice a month with a pastor from Harlowton doing the services. The school building served as a center for social and community events with the Christmas program and the school year end picnic the major events. Card parties and dances were also held. The school stood at the top of Sawmill Hill, on the flat. At one time, the teacher was housed at the school in a trailer. Emma Freezer taught at the school for several years. George and Helen attended the Lode School. The 1920 census had 66 people living in school district 37, which was the Lode School.
On March 18, 1925, Ed held a large auction on his ranch 18 miles northwest of Harlowton. At the time of the auction, he had 13 horses comprising of 5 teams of work horses, two saddle horses, and a bay gelding. He had 65 cows of which 30 were one or two year old steers, 50 calves, and 7 good milk cows . Other items included one hay stacker, one bull rake, 2 hay rakes, 1 D mower, 1 drill, 2 harrows, 2 discs, 1 two way Oliver plow, 1 good plow, 2 slips, 1 scrapper, 1 D binder, cultivators, 3 wagons, 2 hay racks, 1 single buggy, 1 light spring buggy, 1 lamb box, 2 circle saws, 1 power for car, 1 lawn mower, 1 DeLaval separator, 1 butterfly separator, 5 sets of harness, 1 saddle, 1 broad saw, 1 blacksmith outfit complete, tools of all kinds, forks, shovels, bars, chains, pick saws, Ford truck body, one 12 x16 tent, 1 kitchen cabinet, dish cupboard, 2 dining tables, 12 chairs, 1 couch, 1 small table, 3 rocking chairs, 2 arm chairs, 2 high chairs, 1 baby buggy, 2 singer sewing machines, 2 dressers, 2 wash stands, 3 beds, springs and mattresses, 3 heating stoves, 2 ranges, 2 camp stoves, 3 lanterns, 1 sofa, rugs. The reason for the sale is unknown. It was held at the Holliday Ranch.
September 1926, Verda and the children moved into the Hill house in Towdot for the winter. Verda was listed as entertaining the sewing club in April 1927. June of that year saw them returning to the ranch.
Tragedy struck the family on December 20, 1927. Bud became ill with pneumonia at the family home 16 miles north of Harlowton in the Hopley area. He died 24 hours later. He had been a healthy child. The last of February 1929, Ed had an ad in the Harlowton paper listing a small bunch of sheep for sale. On March 30, 1929, Ed held another auction. This time, he was disposing of his property. They were moving to Cagenovia, New York, where Ed would manage a dairy farm for Mr. Hartt. They left for New York the middle of June. They stayed about a year before returning to Wheatland County. They did not like New York.
They returned to the ranch in the Little Belt Mountains. It was a pretty setting in a small valley with a creek running through it. There were several buildings on the ranch, all painted white. As you came up the valley, you crossed a cattle guard. the road crossed the creek a few yards further down. There was a culvert. The first thing you saw was a hay stack. A few blocks up the road brought you to the house with a fenced yard. The house was all one level. Across the front was the front room, dinning room and kitchen. There was an open porch across the front room. An enclosed entry way was on the side by the kitchen. Behind the kitchen was a large pantry where the milk separator stood. Off the pantry was a bathroom complete with a tub with legs. Access to one of the bedrooms was off the dinning room. Access to the other bedroom was from the front room. The bedrooms were behind the front room and dining room. The two bedrooms were connected by a walk in closet. The house was heated by a wood stove in the front room and a black wood burning cook stove in the kitchen. Sick calves or lambs were placed behind the stove in cold weather to keep them warm. Ed liked to sit in his rocker with his feet propped up on the stove in the front room. Here he would pass the time cutting figures, usually a bucking horse with rider, free hand from newspapers. The house received it's electricity form a generator by the barn that was powered by a windmill. Lights were not always very bright. There was no phone. there was running water piped from a spring located west of the house, about a block away up a coulee. Pipes would freeze in the winter.
A root cellar was built into the hill in the back yard. It was vented through the top. There were bins along both sides with shelves down the middle. The bins were filled with sand to store most root vegetables. Onions were hung. Home canned goods were stored on the shelves. It was always cool in the cellar in the summer and warm in the winter. A large garden was raised each year behind the root cellar. It went the full length of the back yard. There was a solid wood fence along the one side of the yard. The out house was part of the fence. A little closer to the house, the wash house became part of the fence. Verda would do her washing her, using a ringer type machine with two tubs. Water was hauled into the wash house. The wash house was also used to store wood for the winter.
The bunk house stood just outside the yard in line with the wash house. It was a one room wood building with a wood stove in the middle. There were bunk beds along the side walls. Pelts from animals Ed had shot were mounted on the walls. They included an albino wolf, bobcat, bear, and a coyote or two. The road went between the bunk house and barn. The barn was a two story affair with the hay loft taking up the upper level. Hay was stored in the loft and feed down holes along the sides of the walls into feed bins for the animals below. The lower section contained several stalls and a small pen in the rear. There was a front and back door on opposite ends of the building. They were double doors, wide enough to drive a tractor or other vehicle through. A tackle room was located in the front part of the barn. Saddles, reins, harness and so on were kept here. There was a work bench across one wall. Tools needed to make repairs on these items were kept here, usually hanging from the wall. Hay was put in the hay loft with the use of a pulley that hung on a pole extending over the door on the second level. This door was located directly above the ground level doors on the front of the barn. To get to the hay loft from inside the barn, a ladder was nailed to some poles that formed a stall. The ladder went straight up and down.
The corral was next. There was a loading chute next to the barn. The corral was made out of logs. It connected the barn to the sheep shed. Hopley Creek flowed through the corral behind the sheep shed. It was joined by water from the spring west of the house. The spring entered the corral behind the barn. The sheep shed sat at right angle to the barn. It was large one story building divided into several pins. It burnt down while Helen was still at home. It was rebuilt. Next in line came the machine shop. It contained tools, anvil, and blacksmith pit. Horses were shod here as well as repairs made on the farm machinery. It was about as deep as the average car. There was a space between the machine shop and chicken coop. Machinery was parked in this area. The chicken coop was fenced. Skunks were a problem. A twenty-two rifle was kept handy by the back door to ward off the 'chicken stealing vermits.' In front of the barn and sheep shed stood a well with a hand pump. There was a water trough for the livestock by the pump. The wind mill stood in this general area as well.
There were hills with pine trees behind the house and across the valley. The road followed the valley through the farm yard and up into the mountains. One had two pole gates to go through to get beyond the farm. One was located next to the barn and the other about I 00 feet further away. The road was a forest service road and could not be blocked of by locking gates. It connected with the old Carroll Stage Coach road which ran along the base of the mountains from Twodot to Judith Gap. Hopley Creek found its way down the valley not far from the road. It was a small creek, narrow enough to jump across in many places. It was no more than a foot or so deep.
The farm was almost self supporting. Vegetable were raised and canned. Chickens were raised for meat and eggs. Milk cows were kept to provide milk and cream. It is rumored among the family the Verda never learned how to milk the cows. Cows were milked by hand in the barn. The milk was brought into the house and ran through the separator. This process separates a portion of the cream from the milk. Cream was used to make butter. Verda made her own bread, noodles, cakes and so on. It was a sin to get caught without any thing baked or the beds not made. Verda considered it a sin to make a cake from a mix to her dying day.
The farm dog was a black border collie named Chept. George thought they had gotten the short end of the deal when he first saw the dog. The name stuck. The dog did not live up to his name. Come milking time, the dog was told to get the cows. Off he took up the valley to where the cows were. The gate was opened, the dog would bring the cows in and herd them into the stalls in the barn with out fail. They never did get him to milk them. The barn cats were present at milking time waiting for spilled milk or some one to try their aim at hitting their mouths. Some milk was always left for the cats. Cows were milked in the morning and evening.
The farm became isolated in the winter. Groceries were brought in October to last through May. If there was a lot of snow, travel out of the valley was difficult. Some years, a car was parked on top of the flat about a mile or two from the ranch. The flat usually blew free of snow and the trip to town could be made.
The cattle, Herefords, since Ed insisted they were the best beef cow around, were wintered in the pastures near the buildings. After calving was over in the spring, they - --- were moved to summer pasture in the Little Belts Mountains. Before winter set in, they were returned to the pastures near the farm. Wild hay was cut or feed. Ed's brand was a closed backward open 4. His stepfather, B.R. Sherman's brand was an open four.
Berry picking was considered an outing. They would pack up the car with every thing needed to make jelly. They would camp out until enough berries were picked and made into jam and jelly to last the year. They usually picked berries along the Big Elk River, south of Twodot. The jam and jelly was made over a bon fire each evening after a day of picking. Ed was not very fond of camping. He said he got enough camping on the yearly roundups held in the spring and fall. Area ranchers and farmers would get together and gather all the cattle. They were branded in the spring and sorted for shipping in the fall. The roundup would last a month to six weeks, sometimes longer. Each rancher had to supply so many horses and men, depending on the number of cattle he owned. Each ranch also had their own chuck wagon. A roundup boss was elected. He coordinated the roundup. By the time they were done, all of Montana was covered. After fences became popular, the roundups were no longer held.
Helen, George and Bud attended the Lode School when they were on the ranch. They would ride their horses to school, a distance of about five miles. After completing the eighth grade, they moved to Harlowton and attended high school there. George played football and was a member of FFA, serving as president his senior year. He was a member of the student council and stage manager for his senior class play. He graduated in 1935. Helen took part in the Klien Meet in 1933. The Klien Meet was a scholastic meet held among the area schools once a year. She placed second in algebra. -In 1934, she was vice president of the student council. She graduated from high school in 1936. Her class will read, 'I will my love for cowboys and ten goon hats to Pauline.'
Helen would ride her horse from the ranch down the valley to a friend's house located by the Mushellshell River, a distance of about 20 miles.
Helen met Herman Karnop and they became engaged the fall of 1937. During November of 1937, two bridal showers were held for the bride-to-be. One was given by Frieda Berry, Herman's sister, and Mrs. Harry Cosgriffe at the Jake Karnop home. The second shower was given by Helen's cousin, Mrs. Arnold Carruthers. Herman and Helen were married November 23, 1937 at the Kiehl ranch.
Ed, Verda, and George continued to live on the ranch until 1949. Verda claimed she never got bored or lonely. There was too much to do. Ed began having trouble with his lungs. They moved two miles west of Absorkee, Montana. They were caretakers for Lansing McIntyre and resided on their summer home on the Stillwater River. They lived in the caretaker's house. They lived here about two years. Ed's emphysema was getting worse. They moved to Arizona in hopes the climate would help. They moved back to Montana, living in Big Timber for a while. They moved in to the Sorboe Apartments behind the Penney's Store in Harlowton. The Graves Hotel was across the street. It was a small apartment, consisting of a front room, bedroom with a bathroom, and kitchen. You walked through the bedroom to reach the kitchen.
On November 7, 1956, Ed was admitted to the Harlowton Memorial Hospital. He was released ten days later. His health continued to go down hill. He spent the last few years in and out of the hospital. He became bed ridden. July 4, 1958, Ed passed away while a patient in the Harlowton Memorial Hospital. He was 70.
Ed had what he claimed to be a sure fire cure for smoking. He was a 'roll your own' man. He made a special cigarette for the first timer. It took only a couple of puffs before the smoker started turning green and became sick to his stomach, swearing his world was coming to an end. He never would say what he put in the cigarette, but some believe it was horse hair. Ed was a smoker himself
Verda continued to live in their apartment. In the Spring of 1963, she had surgery on her one eye. She was left with hardly any sight in it. About 1964, she moved to Sacramento, California to help care for Bill Kiehl's widow, Vita. Bill was Ed's brother. Vita died in 1970. Verda made her home with her niece and Bill's daughter Clara Barlett. Verda lived in California for about 15 years before returning to Montana around 1978. Her main dislike about California was there was no change of seasons. She moved into the retirement home in Absorkee, Montana. She liked to look at the Absorkee Mountains and watch the storms move in. She liked roses and African Violets and grew both with great success. She grew vegetables in the small garden outside her door. While at Absorkee, she enjoyed entertaining her friends and taking part in the social life at the retirement home. She liked to play cards with her friends. Since dinner was not served at the retirement home on Sundays, Verda and three other ladies would take turns fixing Sunday dinner. Each would bring a course. Mildred Kiehl, Verda's sister-in-law, was a frequent visitor. She provided transportation for Verda when she needed it. Verda did not drive. When Verda developed cataracts and could no longer see very well, she moved to Sunshine Village, a retirement home in Great Falls, Montana. Her grandson Jake and his family lived in Great Falls. She was closer to the medical care she needed. Verda had cataract surgery and most of her eyesight was restored. She still could read and kept up her knitting. She remained in relatively good health, her major problem being unsteady on her feet. This condition kept her at home unless her grandchildren came and took her out or to their homes. She spent her holidays and other family occasions with her grandson Jake and his family. They took very good care of her. Verda suffered a massive stroke in November 1988. She could only move an arm and leg. She had to be feed through a tube since she could no longer swallow. She found it almost impossible to talk. She died at the age of 96, D6cember 1,1988 in a Great Falls nursing home. She was buried beside her husband in the Harlowton Cemetery.
When Verda was first married, she wore her hair very long. Her father did not want her to cut it. The long hair gave her headaches. Ed cut her hair and the headaches disappeared. He claimed her head was too empty to ache. Verda was an expert with a knitting needle and crochet hook. When Ed was sick and in the hospital a lot, she would sit by his bedside and crochet lace edgings on hankies and pillow cases. She made fancy doilies. As she grew older, she gave up the fine work and made sweaters for her great grand children for Christmas each year. She made them all afghans. Her friends also received sweaters and afghans as well. The complicated patterns did not slow her down. She was an excellent cook. She baked her own bread as well as bread for Jake and his family up to the time she had her stroke. When her grandchildren were in college, she would send them 'care' packages of assorted cookies and candy, all home made, for Christmas and birthdays. If she knew you were coming for a visit, fresh donuts would be waiting for you. Verda took great store in special occasions. She never missed sending a gift or card for an anniversary or birthday to her family or frends. She sent out lots of Christmas cards, writing on each one. She would receive cards in return. One Christmas, she received over 100 cards. It was not unusual for her to receive 50 birthday cards. Manners were very important. Thank you cards were a must. Verda could speak three languages, German, Norwegian, and English. Verda trusted in the Lord. I never knew either Verda or Ed to attend church. Ed always claimed he was in God's church every time he stepped out the door of the ranch house. Verda did attend Bible Study and church services held at the retirement home. She also attended the exercise classes held there.
After Ed and Verda left the ranch, their son George stayed on to run the place. He remodeled the house. He turned the dining room into a modem kitchen for the times and installed a new bathroom. The old kitchen, pantry and one bedroom were closed off and used for storage. REA (electricity) had come to the ranch in the 50's. Central heat was also installed.
Around 1956 or 1957, George sold the ranch and worked for wages for Henry Pump. On May 3, 1957, George was admitted to the Harlowton hospital with the mumps. He insisted on milking the cows during the coarse of the disease. He ended up in the hospital with convulsions. He was dismissed May 9. In the early 60's, George left Montana to work in Washington. Here, he met and married a widow with grown children. They moved to Colorado and later to New Jersey, where they reside today.

OBITUARY: Sherman Thomas Christensen died 26 June 2000 in Sarasota, Florida, at the age of 90 years. He was born 26 September 1909 in Tagus, North Dakota, eldest child of Andrew C. and Guri T. "Julia" (Handy) Christensen. He attended school in Tagus and then, upon high school graduation in 1928, went to Aakers Business School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. After working in several short-term jobs in Williston, Minot, Bismarck, and Fargo, North Dakota, he moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1933 to attend the Coyne Electrical School. He also took a correspondence course in electric refrigeration from the Utilities Engineering Institute. While in Chicago, he met his future wife Grace Snekszer while managing the Halsted Street Restaurant. They were married 25 May 1935. Sherman and Grace opened Christy's Electric and Refrigeration Service in Chicago shortly after their marriage. This business soon also included the Christy's Trade School correspondence course. Both businesses were sold in 1949. After briefly operating an agency for John Deere farm equipment, Sherman established the Advance Training Institute in 1954. This home study course offered certification in electrical service and appliance repair, refrigeration and air conditioning, and a home plastics business. The School received national accreditation in 1962. By the 1970s the Institute was known as Advanced Schools Inc. (ASI) and had expanded to offer courses in mobile engine servicing, secretarial sciences, business, drafting and design, and electronics. As their children entered adulthood, they joined the Institute in various capacities, making it a true family business. Over the years 150,000 correspondence students graduated with ASI diplomas. He is survived by children Sherman C. Christensen, Carol E. Bell, Richard A., George W., and Joyce Christensen, and by his sister Verda Rogers. Funeral services were held 28 June 2000 and interment was in Sarasota Memorial Park.
